Quand utilisons-nous the ?

The est le mot le plus courant en anglais.

Nous l’utilisons lorsque l’auditeur ou le lecteur sait exactement de quoi nous parlons.

Quand il n’y en a qu’un seul

The Pope is visiting France.

The moon is very bright tonight.

Who is the president of France?

Avec les superlatifs

He is the tallest boy in the class.

It is the oldest building in the town.

Quand c’est clair dans le contexte

We live next to the church. (= the one in our village)

Dad, can I borrow the car? (= our family’s car)

At Grandma’s house, we went to the beach every day.

Look at the boy over there. (= the one I’m pointing at)

Quand cela a été mentionné auparavant

A young man tried to rob a shop.

The man used a hammer to smash the windows.

L’article défini avec les noms

En général, nous n’utilisons pas the avec :

Les noms de personnes – William Shakespeare wrote Hamlet.

Les villes – Paris is the capital of France.

La plupart des pays – Japan is in Asia.

Nous utilisons the avec :

Les pays contenant kingdom, states, republic :

the United Kingdom, the United States, the People’s Republic of China

Les pays dont le nom est au pluriel :

the Netherlands, the Philippines

Les éléments géographiques :

the Himalayas, the Amazon, the Atlantic Ocean, the Panama Canal

Les journaux :

The Times, The Washington Post

Les bâtiments célèbres ou les œuvres d’art :

the Empire State Building, the Taj Mahal, the Mona Lisa

Les organisations :

the United Nations, the Seamen’s Union

Les hôtels, pubs et restaurants :

the Ritz, the King’s Head, the Déjà Vu

Mais : Brown’s Hotel, Morel’s Restaurant
(pas d’article car ils portent le nom de personnes)

Les familles :

the Obamas, the Jacksons

Quand NE PAS utiliser the (article zéro)

Avec les noms de personnes : Mary, Peter, Mr. Brown.

Avec les pays et les villes (sauf cas particuliers) : France, Canada, London.

Avec les langues et les matières scolaires : English, math, chemistry.

Avec les repas : We had dinner at 7.

Avec les sports : She plays tennis.
