Was ist der Second Conditional?

Der Second Conditional wird verwendet für:

Verwendung	Beispiel
Imaginäre Situationen	"If I were rich, I would travel the world."
Unwirkliche Möglichkeiten	"If she had wings, she could fly."
Ratschläge & höfliche Vorschläge	"If I were you, I would take the job."

Interessante Tatsache: Der Second Conditional spricht über unmögliche oder unwahrscheinliche Situationen, während der First Conditional über mögliche Situationen spricht!

Struktur des Second Conditional

If + Past Simple, would + Grundform des Verbs

Beispiele	Bedeutung
If I won the lottery, I would buy a house.	(Imaginary situation)
If she studied harder, she would get better grades.	(Unreal possibility)
If we lived in Paris, we would eat croissants every day.	(Hypothetical life)

Tipp: Der If-Satz beschreibt die Bedingung (Past Simple), und der Hauptsatz zeigt das Ergebnis (Would + Grundform des Verbs).

1. Variationen des Second Conditional

Verwendung von „could“ oder „might“ statt „would“

Beispiel	Bedeutung
If I had more time, I could learn Spanish.	(Ability)
If she tried harder, she might win.	(Possibility)

2. Verwendung von „were“ statt „was“

Beispiel

If I were you, I would take the job.

If he were taller, he could be a basketball player.

Tipp: Im formellen Englisch verwenden wir „were“ statt „was“ mit I, he, she, it in Second-Conditional-Sätzen.

Second Conditional vs. First Conditional

Tipp: Verwende den Second Conditional, wenn etwas unwahrscheinlich oder imaginär ist, und den First Conditional, wenn es realistisch ist.

Häufige Fehler im Second Conditional

Verwendung von „would“ im If-Satz	If she would study, she would pass.	If she studied, she would pass.
Verwendung der Gegenwart im If-Satz	If I win the lottery, I would buy a house.	If I won the lottery, I would buy a house.
Verwendung von „was“ statt „were“ (formelles Englisch)	If I was rich, I would travel.	If I were rich, I would travel.
Verwendung der First-Conditional-Struktur für unwirkliche Situationen	If I see a ghost, I would run away.	If I saw a ghost, I would run away.

Regel: Verwende NIEMALS „would“ nach „if“! Der If-Satz steht immer im Past Simple.
