Wat is de Second Conditional?

De Second Conditional wordt gebruikt voor:

Denkbeeldige situaties	"If I were rich, I would travel the world."
Onwerkelijke mogelijkheden	"If she had wings, she could fly."
Advies en beleefde suggesties	"If I were you, I would take the job."

Leuk weetje: De Second Conditional gaat over onmogelijke of onwaarschijnlijke situaties, terwijl de First Conditional over mogelijke situaties spreekt!

Structuur van de Second Conditional

If + past simple, would + base verb

Voorbeelden	Betekenis
If I won the lottery, I would buy a house.	(Imaginary situation)
If she studied harder, she would get better grades.	(Unreal possibility)
If we lived in Paris, we would eat croissants every day.	(Hypothetical life)

Tip: De if-zin beschrijft de voorwaarde (Past Simple), en de hoofdzin laat het resultaat zien (Would + Base Verb).

Variaties van de Second Conditional

1. Gebruik van "could" of "might" in plaats van "would"

Voorbeeld	Betekenis
If I had more time, I could learn Spanish.	(Ability)
If she tried harder, she might win.	(Possibility)

2. Gebruik van "were" in plaats van "was"

Voorbeeld

If I were you, I would take the job.

If he were taller, he could be a basketball player.

Tip: In formeel Engels gebruiken we "were" in plaats van "was" met I, he, she, it in zinnen met de Second Conditional.

Second Conditional vs. First Conditional

Tip: Gebruik de Second Conditional wanneer iets onwaarschijnlijk of denkbeeldig is, en de First Conditional wanneer het realistisch is.

Veelgemaakte fouten in de Second Conditional

Gebruik van "would" in de if-zin	If she would study, she would pass.	If she studied, she would pass.
Gebruik van de tegenwoordige tijd in de if-zin	If I win the lottery, I would buy a house.	If I won the lottery, I would buy a house.
Gebruik van "was" in plaats van "were" (formeel Engels)	If I was rich, I would travel.	If I were rich, I would travel.
Gebruik van de First Conditional-structuur voor onwerkelijke situaties	If I see a ghost, I would run away.	If I saw a ghost, I would run away.

Regel: Gebruik NOOIT "would" na "if"! De if-zin staat altijd in de Past Simple.
