am – alleen met I

I am 20.

I’m at home.

is – met he, she, it of met zelfstandige naamwoorden in het enkelvoud

He is tall.

It is on the table.

are – met we, you, they en met zelfstandige naamwoorden in het meervoud

We are in London.

You are my best friend.

They are students.

Korte vormen (samentrekkingen)

I am = I’m

You are = you’re

He is = he’s

She is = she’s

It is = it’s

We are = we’re

They are = they’re

Voorbeelden:

I’m at the park.

She’s a singer.

Ontkennend

We voegen not toe na be.

I’m not ready.

She isn’t here.

They aren’t American.

In informeel Engels hoor je soms ook ain’t (alleen gesproken Engels):

I ain’t ready.

He ain’t here.

We gebruiken be om over veel dingen te praten:
