Usiamo that (singolare) e those (plurale) per parlare di cose che sono lontane da noi.

That house looks very old.
I don’t need those shoes on the shelf.

Con o senza un nome

I dimostrativi possono essere usati con un nome o senza un nome.

Con un nome:

This book is really interesting.
I know that teacher very well.

Senza un nome:

Who is that? (= that person)
“What are those?” - “They’re my school notebooks.”

This is… (presentazioni e telefono)

Usiamo This is… quando presentiamo delle persone o quando rispondiamo al telefono.

Hello, this is Alex. (on the phone)
Mia: “This is my brother Tom.” - Sarah: “Hi Tom, nice to meet you.”

Suggerimento per la pratica: Indica gli oggetti intorno a te e dì this o that, a seconda della distanza. Poi prova con le forme plurali these e those.
