There is e there are: como usar e diferenças

As expressões there is e there are são usadas para mostrar que algo existe em um lugar, para descrever a localização das coisas ou para falar sobre quantidade. A palavra there, nesse caso, não indica lugar (“aqui/lá”), mas funciona como um sujeito vazio (dummy subject).

There is + substantivo contável singular / substantivo incontável

  • There is a mouse in the kitchen.

  • There is some milk in the fridge.

There are + substantivo contável no plural

  • There are two cats in the garden.

  • There are some books on the desk.

Com “someone” ou “something”:

  • There was someone at the door.

  • There was something strange in the room.

Dica: No singular, normalmente usamos a / an antes do substantivo.

Frases negativas

Forma: there + be + not + substantivo

  • There isn’t a cat in the garden.

  • There aren’t any pencils on my desk.

  • There wasn’t any food in the box.

  • There won’t be a party next week.
