FAQ: Decision-Making and Difficulty Vocabulary

What is the difference between “complicated,” “tough,” and “tricky”?

  • Complicated means something has many parts or is difficult to understand (e.g., The instructions were too complicated to follow).

  • Tough means challenging or requiring strength and effort (e.g., It was a tough decision to quit my job).

  • Tricky means something is difficult to do or solve because it requires skill or careful thinking (e.g., This puzzle is tricky, but I think I can solve it).

What does “weigh up the pros and cons” mean?

It means to consider both the advantages and disadvantages before making a decision. For example, Before buying a car, you should weigh up the pros and cons of different models.

How is “decisive” different from “make up your mind”?

  • Decisive describes a person who makes decisions quickly and with confidence (e.g., She is a decisive leader).

  • Make up your mind is the action of finally deciding something (e.g., I can’t make up my mind about where to go on holiday).

What does “let your heart rule your head” mean?

This means making a decision based on emotions rather than logic. For example, She let her heart rule her head and stayed in the relationship even though she wasn’t happy.

Why is “rushing into a decision” considered a bad thing?

Rushing into a decision means deciding too quickly without thinking things through. This can lead to mistakes or regrets. For example, He rushed into a decision to quit his job and later regretted it.
