How to Form Questions

1. Structure of Questions

Most questions with question words follow this structure:

Question Word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb

  • Examples:

    • What do you like?

    • Where is your house?

    • When can we meet?

2. Questions with "Be"

If the verb is "to be" (am, is, are), the structure is slightly different:

Question Word + Be Verb + Subject

  • Examples:

    • Where is he?

    • Who are they?

3. Short Answers

When answering a question word, give only the necessary information:

  • Question: Where do you live?
    Answer: In London.

  • Question: What is your name?
    Answer: Anna.

Common Errors

Error

Why it’s Wrong

Correct Version

Where you live?

Missing auxiliary verb ("do").

Where do you live?

What is she doing? (She singing.)

Wrong verb form in the answer.

She is singing.

When you are coming?

When are you coming?

Examples in Everyday Use

Here are some examples of how question words are used in daily life:

  • What: What is your favorite movie?

  • Where: Where do you work?

  • Who: Who is calling you?

  • Why: Why are you sad?

Rules to Remember

  1. Always match the auxiliary verb with the subject:

    • What does she like?

    • Where do they go?

  2. For "to be" questions, don’t add "do":

    • Correct: Where is the book?

    • Wrong: Where does is the book?

  3. Use the correct question word for the information you want:

    • What: for things/actions.

    • Where: for places.

    • Why: for reasons.
