grill | to cook something by putting it close to great heat above or below it | Chop the tomatoes while I grill the chicken. |
boil | when a liquid boils, or when you boil it, it becomes hot enough to turn into gas | Boil the potatoes. |
bake | cook (food) by dry heat without direct exposure to a flame, typically in an oven | I'm baking some bread |
steam | the mist that forms on windows, mirrors etc when warm wet air suddenly becomes cold | She wiped the steam off the mirror |
chop | cut (something) into pieces with repeated sharp blows of an axe or knife | I like chopping herbs, they smell nice. |
slice | a flat, often thin, piece of food that has been cut from a larger piece | For lunch I had two slices of ham and some bread. |

bowl | a rounded dish that holds food | He puts egg yolks, cream, milk, sugar and flavours into a metal bowl |
saucepan | a round deep metal container with a long handle, used for cooking food on a cooker | Boil the potatoes in a saucepan |
scales | a set of numbers, amounts, etc., used to measure or compare the level of something | Put the parcel on the scales, please. |
sieve | an object that you pour a liquid or mixture through to remove the solid or largest pieces | Put the vegetables in a sieve to drain the water |
spatula | a kitchen utensil with a wide, flat blade, used esp. for lifting and spreading foods | Uncover and turn rice over in large pieces with a heatproof rubber spatula. |
whisk | a utensil for whipping eggs or cream | Stir the eggs with a whisk |
crunchy | (of food) firm and making a loud noise when it is eaten | These cookies are very crunchy. |
juicy | full of juice or juices and therefore enjoyable to eat | These oranges are nice and juicy. |
greasy | covered with or full of fat or oil | These French fries are too greasy. |
crispy | appealingly crunchy | The result is a crispy, brownish fried pie. |

fluffy | light and full of air | Beat the eggs and sugar together until they are fluffy. |
slimy | covered by or resembling slime | The field is full of slimy mud |
lumpy | filled or covered with lumps | The lumpy mashed potatoes were cold as well |
watery | watery food or drink contains too much water and has little taste | They brought me watery tomato juice |
rubbery | resembling rubber (as in elasticity, consistency, or texture) | The hard-boiled eggs were tough and rubbery. |
custard | a sweet sauce made from eggs, milk, and sugar and poured over sweet dishes | She treated us to an apple pie and custard |
lentil | a very small dried bean that is cooked and eaten | I had lentil soup for lunch |
starving | dying because of not having enough food | I was starving when I came home from school. |
